Protein-Rich Fibrin (PRF)
What is Protein-Rich Fibrin (PRF)
Protein-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a natural, autologous biomaterial derived from a patient’s own blood, used to promote healing and tissue regeneration in various dental and medical procedures. PRF is obtained through a simple process of blood collection and centrifugation, resulting in a fibrin matrix enriched with platelets, growth factors, and cytokines that facilitate accelerated healing and tissue repair.

Purpose
Purpose
- To enhance healing and tissue regeneration in dental and medical procedures.
- To reduce recovery times and improve outcomes for treatments involving soft tissue and bone.
How PRF is Made
How PRF is Made
- A small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn.
- The blood is then placed in a centrifuge and spun at a specific speed to separate the components.
- This process results in the formation of a fibrin clot rich in platelets, growth factors, and other bioactive molecules.
Components of PRF
Components of PRF
- Fibrin Matrix: Provides a scaffold for cell migration and tissue formation.
- Platelets: Release growth factors that are essential for healing and regeneration.
- Growth Factors and Cytokines: Promote cell proliferation, differentiation, and angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels).
Applications in Dentistry
Applications in Dentistry
- Oral Surgery: Used in tooth extractions, implant placements, and bone grafting to enhance healing and bone regeneration.
- Socket Preservation: Helps maintain bone volume and integrity after tooth extraction.
Benefits
Benefits
- Accelerated Healing: PRF releases growth factors slowly over time, enhancing the healing process.
- Reduced Risk of Infection: As an autologous product, PRF minimizes the risk of immune reactions and infections.
- Improved Tissue Regeneration: Enhances the body’s natural regenerative abilities, leading to better outcomes in bone and soft tissue repair.
- Biocompatibility: Being derived from the patient’s own blood, PRF is fully biocompatible and well-tolerated.
Procedure
Procedure
- The process begins with a standard blood draw from the patient.
- The blood is then centrifuged to separate the PRF.
- The PRF clot is collected and can be immediately applied to the surgical site or used in various regenerative procedures.
Aftercare
Aftercare
- Patients should follow standard post-operative care instructions provided by their dental professional.
- Maintain good oral hygiene to su pport healing.
- Attend follow-up appointments to monitor progress and ensure successful integration of the PRF.
Suitability
Suitability
- PRF is suitable for most patients undergoing dental surgery, periodontal treatments, or procedures requiring enhanced healing.
- Patients with specific blood disorders or health conditions may need additional evaluation to determine suitability.
Protein-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is an innovative and effective tool in regenerative medicine and dentistry, leveraging the body’s natural healing mechanisms to improve outcomes and reduce recovery times. By using PRF, dental professionals can enhance the success of various treatments, providing patients with better healing and overall care.

Dr. Landreneau is an absolutely fabulous dentist! He is funny, so caring, and incredibly detailed. I recently moved from Louisiana and will still be going back to see him if possible. Root canal was painless and he did two crowns on my back teeth. The crowns look awesome. I love showing them to people because they look so real. His staff is also great! Every experience in his office has been wonderful. I recommend him to everyone.
Lori S.
As a student dentist at LSU School of Dentistry, I've worked under Dr. Landreneau's supervision. He is very knowledgeable in many aspects of dentistry, and I've learned unforgettable skills. I find that he provides care to my patients as a whole opposed to only worrying about one tooth at a time. I can easily observe that he practices dentistry because he actually enjoys what he does. He ensures that my patients understand what, why, and how we treat them before we start any procedures. I would highly recommend family and friends to go there.
