Airway Evaluation with Eccovision
What is Airway Evaluation with Eccovision?
An Airway Evaluation with Eccovision is a diagnostic procedure used to assess the patency (openness) and function of the upper airway, particularly the pharynx and larynx. It utilizes a technology called Eccovision Acoustic Pharyngometry, which measures airway dimensions and airflow dynamics non-invasively.

Purpose
Purpose
- The primary purpose of an Airway Evaluation with Eccovision is to assess the structure and function of the upper airway to identify any abnormalities or obstructions that may contribute to sleep-disordered breathing, such as snoring or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
- It helps clinicians understand the patient’s airway anatomy, size, collapsibility, and airflow patterns, which are essential for diagnosing and managing airway-related disorders.
Eccovision Technology
Eccovision Technology
- Eccovision Acoustic Pharyngometry utilizes sound waves to measure the dimensions of the upper airway.
- During the evaluation, the patient breathes quietly into a handheld device that emits sound waves into the airway. These waves bounce off the tissues and structures of the airway and are then captured by the device’s sensors.
- The device analyzes the time it takes for the sound waves to travel back and forth, providing detailed information about the size and shape of the airway.
Procedure
Procedure
- The Airway Evaluation with Eccovision is typically performed in a clinical setting by a trained healthcare professional, such as a dentist or sleep specialist.
- The patient sits comfortably while the clinician conducts the evaluation using the Eccovision device.
- Measurements are taken at various points along within the pharynx and larynx regions.
- The process is non-invasive and painless, requiring no sedation or special preparation.
Benefits
Benefits
- Comprehensive Assessment: Provides detailed information about the structure and function of the upper airway, allowing for a comprehensive evaluation of airway health.
- Objective Data: Offers objective measurements of airway dimensions and airflow dynamics, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning.
- Patient-Friendly: Non-invasive and well-tolerated, making it suitable for patients of all ages and those with medical conditions that may preclude other diagnostic tests.
- Treatment Guidance: Helps guide treatment decisions for sleep-disordered breathing conditions, such as oral appliance therapy or surgical interventions.
Applications
Applications
- Sleep Medicine: Assists in the diagnosis and management of sleep-related breathing disorders, including snoring, upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS), and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
- Dentistry: Used by dentists specializing in dental sleep medicine to assess airway health and determine the suitability of oral appliance therapy for treating sleep apnea.
- Orthodontics: Helps orthodontists evaluate airway dimensions and breathing patterns in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, especially those with craniofacial anomalies or breathing-related issues.
Interpretation and Follow-Up
Interpretation and Follow-Up
- The data obtained from the Eccovision evaluation are interpreted by the healthcare provider to assess airway function and identify any abnormalities or areas of concern.
- Depending on the findings, further diagnostic tests or treatment interventions may be recommended to address airway-related issues and improve respiratory health.
An Airway Evaluation with Eccovision using Acoustic Pharyngometry is a valuable tool in the assessment and management of airway disorders, providing clinicians with objective data to guide treatment decisions and improve patient outcomes in sleep medicine, dentistry, and orthodontics.

Dr. Landreneau is an absolutely fabulous dentist! He is funny, so caring, and incredibly detailed. I recently moved from Louisiana and will still be going back to see him if possible. Root canal was painless and he did two crowns on my back teeth. The crowns look awesome. I love showing them to people because they look so real. His staff is also great! Every experience in his office has been wonderful. I recommend him to everyone.

As a student dentist at LSU School of Dentistry, I've worked under Dr. Landreneau's supervision. He is very knowledgeable in many aspects of dentistry, and I've learned unforgettable skills. I find that he provides care to my patients as a whole opposed to only worrying about one tooth at a time. I can easily observe that he practices dentistry because he actually enjoys what he does. He ensures that my patients understand what, why, and how we treat them before we start any procedures. I would highly recommend family and friends to go there.
