Dental Implants
What are Dental Implants?
Dental Implants are artificial tooth roots made from biocompatible materials, typically titanium, that are surgically placed into the jawbone to support the replacement of teeth that have been lost. They provide a strong, stable foundation for these prosthetic teeth, mimicking the function and appearance of natural teeth.

Purpose
Purpose
- To replace missing teeth and restore the function and aesthetics of the mouth.
- To provide a permanent solution for tooth loss, offering greater comfort and stability compared to traditional dentures or bridges.
Components
Components
- Implant: The screw-like post that is inserted into the jawbone and acts as a tooth root.
- Abutment: A connector placed on top of the implant to hold and support the replacement tooth.
- Crown: The visible part of the replacement tooth, made to match the color and shape of natural teeth.
Procedure
Procedure
- Consultation and Planning: The dentist evaluates the patient’s oral health, takes X-rays or 3D scans, and creates a customized treatment plan.
- Implant Placement: The implant is surgically inserted into the jawbone under local anesthesia. Healing and osseointegration (the process where the implant fuses with the bone) take 3-6 months.
- Abutment Placement: Once the implant has integrated with the jawbone, an abutment is attached.
- Crown Placement: After the gums heal around the abutment, a custom-made crown is attached to complete the restoration.
Benefits
Benefits
- Natural Look and Feel: Dental implants closely mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth.
- Durability: Implants are designed to be a long-term solution, often lasting many years with proper care.
- Improved Oral Health: Unlike bridges, implants do not require the alteration of adjacent teeth, preserving natural tooth structure.
- Comfort and Stability: Implants eliminate the discomfort and inconvenience associated with removable dentures.
- Bone Preservation: Implants stimulate the jawbone, helping to prevent bone loss and maintain facial structure.
Aftercare
Aftercare
- Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.
- Healthy Lifestyle: Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, which can affect the healing process and the longevity of the implants.
- Regular Monitoring: Schedule follow-up visits with the dentist to monitor the implants and surrounding tissues.
Suitability
Suitability
- Most adults with healthy gums and sufficient jawbone density are candidates for dental implants.
- Patients with certain medical conditions, insufficient bone structure, or those undergoing treatments that affect bone healing may require additional procedures or may not be suitable candidates.
- A thorough evaluation by a dental professional is necessary to determine if implants are the right option.
- Patients must be 21 years of age or older before undergoing this procedure to insure proper growth development.
Considerations
Considerations
- Cost: Dental implants can be more expensive upfront compared to other tooth replacement options, but they are often more cost-effective in the long run due to their durability.
- Time: The implant process can take several months from start to finish, requiring patience and commitment.
- Potential Risks: As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, such as infection, implant failure, or complications with the surrounding tissues, though these are relatively rare.

Dr. Landreneau is an absolutely fabulous dentist! He is funny, so caring, and incredibly detailed. I recently moved from Louisiana and will still be going back to see him if possible. Root canal was painless and he did two crowns on my back teeth. The crowns look awesome. I love showing them to people because they look so real. His staff is also great! Every experience in his office has been wonderful. I recommend him to everyone.
Lori S.
As a student dentist at LSU School of Dentistry, I've worked under Dr. Landreneau's supervision. He is very knowledgeable in many aspects of dentistry, and I've learned unforgettable skills. I find that he provides care to my patients as a whole opposed to only worrying about one tooth at a time. I can easily observe that he practices dentistry because he actually enjoys what he does. He ensures that my patients understand what, why, and how we treat them before we start any procedures. I would highly recommend family and friends to go there.
