Bone Preservation
What is Bone Preservation?
Bone Preservation for Extraction Sites refers to a set of procedures aimed at maintaining the integrity and volume of the jawbone after a tooth is extracted. This is crucial to prevent bone loss, which can occur when a tooth is removed and the surrounding bone is no longer stimulated by the tooth’s presence.

Purpose
Purpose
- To maintain the jawbone’s shape and density following tooth extraction.
- To prepare the site for future dental implants or other restorative treatments.
- To prevent the jawbone from deteriorating and altering the facial structure.
Why Bone Loss Occurs
Why Bone Loss Occurs
- When a tooth is extracted, the bone that surrounded the tooth root begins to resorb (break down) because it no longer receives the stimulation from chewing and biting forces.
- This process can lead to significant bone loss, affecting the stability of adjacent teeth and the overall shape of the jaw.
Bone Preservation Techniques
Bone Preservation Techniques
- Socket Preservation: A bone grafting material is placed in the empty tooth socket immediately after extraction to promote new bone growth and prevent collapse.
- Guided Bone Regeneration: A barrier membrane is used along with bone grafts to direct the growth of new bone in areas where it is needed.
- Use of Growth Factors: Proteins and other biological materials that promote tissue regeneration may be used to enhance the healing and bone formation process.
Materials Used in Bone Grafting
Materials Used in Bone Grafting
- Autografts: Bone taken from another part of the patient’s body.
- Allografts: Donor bone from a tissue bank.
- Xenografts: Bone from animal sources, typically bovine.
Procedure
Procedure
- The dentist or oral surgeon cleans the extraction site thoroughly.
- Bone grafting material is placed into the socket where the tooth was removed.
- A membrane or dressing is used to protect the graft and promote healing.
- The site is sutured, and the patient is given specific post-operative care instructions.
Benefits
Benefits
- Maintains Jawbone Structure: Prevents the collapse of the jawbone and preserves the natural contour of the face.
- Facilitates Future Dental Work: Creates a stable foundation for future dental implants, bridges, or dentures.
- Prevents Shifting: Helps maintain the alignment of adjacent teeth by preserving the space where the tooth was extracted for up to a year.
- Improves Aesthetic Outcomes: Enhances the appearance of dental restorations by providing a natural-looking gum line and bone structure.
Aftercare
Aftercare
- Follow post-operative instructions provided by the dental professional to ensure proper healing.
- Maintain good oral hygiene to prevent infection.
- Attend follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and the integration of the bone graft.
Suitability
Suitability
- Most patients undergoing tooth extraction can benefit from bone preservation techniques.
- Patients with certain medical conditions or insufficient bone volume may require additional evaluation to determine the best approach.
Bone Preservation for Extraction Sites is a crucial procedure to prevent bone loss and maintain the health and structure of the jaw after a tooth extraction. By utilizing various grafting techniques and materials, dental professionals can ensure that the extraction site heals properly, providing a solid foundation for future dental restorations and preserving the patient’s overall oral health.

Dr. Landreneau is an absolutely fabulous dentist! He is funny, so caring, and incredibly detailed. I recently moved from Louisiana and will still be going back to see him if possible. Root canal was painless and he did two crowns on my back teeth. The crowns look awesome. I love showing them to people because they look so real. His staff is also great! Every experience in his office has been wonderful. I recommend him to everyone.

As a student dentist at LSU School of Dentistry, I've worked under Dr. Landreneau's supervision. He is very knowledgeable in many aspects of dentistry, and I've learned unforgettable skills. I find that he provides care to my patients as a whole opposed to only worrying about one tooth at a time. I can easily observe that he practices dentistry because he actually enjoys what he does. He ensures that my patients understand what, why, and how we treat them before we start any procedures. I would highly recommend family and friends to go there.
